Water can be boiled more efficiently with a new way found by Scientists
When water is boiled be it a cup of water in kitchen or for power plant generating electricity, it gets boiled a lot. Any enhancements in the efficiency of this method could have a large impact on the quantity of energy used for it daily.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The new technique can save a lot of energy while boiling water
- There are two key parameters of boiling process: HTC and CHF
- The researchers had devised three ‘tiers’ of surface modification
One such improvement would eventually come with a new developed treatment for surfaces which includes heating and evaporation of water. The treatment enhances two key parameters that determine the boiling process: the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and the critical heat flux (CHF).
Most of the time, the two of them trade-off among themselves, when one improves, the other one gets worse. Well, after many years of investigation, the research team behind the technique has found the way of enhancing both of them.
According to Youngsup Song, the bioinformatics scientist from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California 'Both parameters are considered as necessary, however enhancing both of the parameters together would be tough and tricky because they have intrinsic trade-off.'
'Well, if we have got several bubbles on the boiling surface means boiling is incredibly efficient, but if we found that it got too many bubbles on the surface, they would coalesce all together, which might form a vapor film over the boiling surface.'
Any vapor film between the hot surface and therefore the water introduces resistance, lowers the heat transfer efficiency and the CHF value. To get around the issue, the researchers have devised three completely different kinds of surface modification.
One challenge is all set to find ways that can make the surface textures and therefore the three 'tiers' of modifications. Well, there are completely different approaches which could be explored, and the procedure would also work for various kinds of liquids too.
